Sri Lankan legend & ex-captain Kumar Sangakkara has praised his country’s current captain Dinesh Chandimal after the Lankans completed a fabulous 2-0 test series win against Pakistan at the UAE. Pakistan had never lost a test series at Dubai up until now. This is now their first home test series loss for 10 years. And according to the stylish llfefty, it’s all down to the brilliant leadership of Chandimal.
In his very first away assignment, Chandimal passed with flying colors as Sri Lanka won by 21 & 68 runs respectively. The skipper was in fine form with the bat himself too, scoring an unbeaten 155 in the first test. He also added a crisp half century in the second one.
Talking about Chandimal, an understandably excited Sangakkara said, “It was a memorable test series. The boys put in a lot of hard work & Chandimal’s leadership was brilliant. People sometimes mistake him for being a slow run getter, but hey, it’s test. This is exactly how you play the test cricket. The way he crafted the field was superb in the final innings.”
Sangakkara himself was Sri Lanka’s test captain & has seen the meteoric rise of the present captain. Back in 2011, coach Geoff Marsh split the squad in groups of two. Chandimal was paired up with Kumar. It was an effort tfor better team bonding where the seniors were supposed to take the juniors out for lunch or dinner. It was also a great learning scope for the younger ones. Sangakkara recalls the experience by saying, “With Chandi, I didn’t have to do lot. I used to talk to him about how to bat for long periods of time without breaking concentration. I also gave him some tips on how to convert the 50s into 100s. He’s an excellent batsman. Sadly, due to the ins & outs, his confidence dipped. He has a great record even in England, Australia too. His ODI stats are great too. He’s now starting t lead the side & show us exactly what he’s capable of”. The former keeper concluded by saying, “Chandi should be in all three formats & he must bat at number three for his and the team’s greater good”.
