The present series between Pakistan & Sri Lanka has a T-20 match set to commence in Lahore. But due to the security issues & horrible memories of the last series in Pakistan, Sri Lankan players have decided not to tour Pakistan. As many as forty contracted players have handed a letter to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board indicating they do not wish to travel to Lahore for the match. Although the players’ actions doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want to play, it rather shows they want the board to consider a venue change.
An SLC source said, “SLC will have a quick chat to the players very soon. We don’t intend to disturb them in middle of a series, but we are left with no option but to address the issue. ICC also will meet the players on Saturday to brief them about the situation in Lahore”. The only player to not have signed the petition is All-rounder Thisara Perera who was part of the World XI that played three-T20s in Lahore as recently as last month. Pakistan was stripped of hosting International cricket after the Sri Lankan team bus came under a terrorist attack in 2009, outisde Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore, injuring several players and support staff. Only time will tell what eventually happens to the match. Watch this space.
