England’s newly appointed bowling consultant, a New Zealand great, Shane Bond has claimed that he thinks England will win the Ashes series by a close margin. The highly anticipated clash between England & Australia starts from November 23rd. Bond got the England bowling consultant gig after their coach Ottis Gibson joined to coach the South African team. It’s been a somewhat uncomfortable two months for England with all the outfield issues. Despite all the happenings with Ben Stokes & Alex Hales, The former Kiwi pacer remains firm on his verdict that it will be the English pacers who’ll win it for his ‘new’ team.
He believes that veterans like James Anderson & Stuart Board, along with new recruit Toby Roland-Jones can cause havoc in the Aussie batting line up. The former right arm fast bowler, who himself used to strike some serious fear in the oppositions’ hearts, believes that it’ll be the veteran duo of Anderson & Broad who’ll be the ‘usual suspects’. Despite none having not that good figures in Australia (Anderson played 13 Tests in Australia, averaging 38.44 and Broad played 7 with an average of 32.13. Bond said, “Coming to Australia, you know the seams are going to be flatter, the wickets are flat, the ball doesn’t do much; so you’ve got to find a way to get the ball to move off the straight.
Australia are bloody strong in their own conditions. So that’s the stuff we’ve got three-and-a-half weeks to work through before we turn up in Brisbane. And if we get that right, with the quality bowlers we’ve got, we’ll give them a pretty good run for their money.” Bond was especially excited when asked whether England can retain the Ashes, “One hundred per cent, I mean you’ve got a couple of blokes with 900 Test wickets between them, and then some blokes with pace and bounce built in around that. I think it’s going to be a close series, but there’s no doubt the team has the talent to win the series”.
