With test championships & ODI Cricket League being approved, the future doesn’t look good for the ICC Champions’ Trophy. Reports have it that the governing body’s meeting in Auckland commencing on October 13th will discuss about the tournament played by the top 8 ODI teams.
Some suggest that ICC might remove the tournament in favor of another T-20 WC as they believe the associate nations will have greater chance to improve their skills in the shortest format of the game. T-20 World Cup, which is contested every two years, now look to have an edition in 2022 with the Champions’ Trophy 2021 in danger of being removed for good.
This is not the first time this tournament has been questioned. Actually since 2013, the members have been opposing against holding such a tournament which doesn’t ensure progress for the needed teams. With the opposing parties more vocal than ever, we may already have seen the last of ICC Champions trophy earlier this year.
